Ultracapacitors, also known by name of Supercapacitors or Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitors (EDLC), represent a family of energy storage devices demonstrating extremely high specific power characteristics which outperform any known type of batteries, such as lead-acid, Li-ion and NiMH. In the same time, ultracapacitors can store quite high values of specific energy, greater than conventional non double layer capacitors.

Ultracapacitors can be used as a stand-alone system or as an ultracapacitor-battery combination. In the latter case, ultracapacitors substantially increase the battery efficiency and operation life.

Some of the main applications for the ultracapacitors include:

- Transport (hybrid vehicles/buses, kinetic energy recuperation systems (kers), start stop systems etc);
- Industry (cranes, forklifts, welding machines);
