The beginning of year 2004 was marked with a significant event in the field of Green Energy. Presidium of National Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (NAS of Ukraine) decreed that Institute for Renewable Energy should be established.

Six scientific departments make up the structure of the Institute:
complex energy systems
solar energy
wind energy
hydro power
geothermal power
bioenergy

Before Institute establishment all activities in renewable power were performed by various research organizations which were submitted to different Ministries and authorities.
Financing these activities was not stable, project plans were uncoordinated.
Within Institute establishment there appeared prerequisites for carrying out fundamental and applied investigations in the field. And as a result it will contribute to speeding up the development of non-traditional and renewable power in Ukraine as well as upgrading this economy branch to international level.
Accumulating all efforts of national researchers within the framework of National Ukrainian Academy of Sciences has built a base for substantial renewable power development and modern energy generating technologies' implementation (based on RES utilization) in Ukrainian national economy.
