One of the spiritual heirs of the best traditions of the past in Kyiv – Klovsky Lyceum № 77 has recently celebrated 110th anniversary from the day of foundation. The school was opened at the oldest Kyiv plant «Arsenal» for money of workers and democratic intelligentsia for the children of plant workers on October 1, 1900.
In 1923 it got the number of 77. The modern building of school was built in 1937 in place of ancient Klovskiy Monastery of ХІ c., destroyed by Mongol-Tatars. All events the country experienced went through the fate of the school: revolution and civil war, reconstruction of the 30s, horrible repressions, the Great Patriotic War, the first years of development and democratization, and, finally, gaining independence by Ukraine. The status of establishment of new type – the lyceum was granted to the school in 1993. Now Klovsky Lyceum № 77 is one of the leading city's educational establishments majoring in English. The school has been always working creatively and hard. In 1977 it got the rank of the first-rate one and has been the leader in Ukrainian education for many years. As a result of state attestation of educational establishments in 2004 the lyceum is acknowledged attested with insignia.
Folk teacher of Ukraine, Hero of Socialist Labour Galyna Ye. Glushchenko headed the school for over 40 years. Today Inna B. Spivakova is its principal.
Now the staff of the lyceum is working on development and approbation of new education content, intensive teaching and educational methods and forms, on introduction of properties of modern pedagogical science and advanced pedagogical experience. Development of interest to cognition and self-education, forming the humanistic world outlook, tolerance, involvement of students in national and world culture, development of creative abilities of students, assistance with self-expression of personality in different ways are the main activities of teaching staff of Klovsky Lyceum № 77.
Over 20 subjects of humanitarian and natural-mathematical profiles and several foreign languages (English, German and French) are studied in the educational establishment. In the near prospect is an increase of number of foreign languages learned (of neighbouring and other countries'). The lyceum has a long-term experience of introduction of special courses, optional studies, conducting individual work.
The high-professional team of teachers works in the lyceum (70 teachers, including 4 honoured teachers of Ukraine, 39 teachers-methodists and senior teachers). These are talented and single-minded teachers loving children most of all and putting their soul and heart in them.
The lyceum co-operates with 6 higher educational establishments of Kyiv and also supports partner links with educational establishments of other countries. The lyceum practices encouragement of specialists from the USA, Great Britain, Germany to teaching.
Many students of Klovskiy Lyceum constantly win in Olympiads and contests, including international ones. As a rule, all graduates become the students of prestigious higher educational establishments of our country and foreign countries. The credo of teaching staff is «Pride of the lyceum – businesses of its graduates». The life of students is interesting and many-faceted. Student's self-government – presidential council operates in the lyceum. The establishment publishes its own newspaper «77 meridian» for many years. The library is supplied with modern equipment. The museum of school history has collected unique documents, letters, pictures, personals related to the life of students and teachers for 110 years of its existence and has been functioning for 30 years. The museum is a store-house of memory of generations and culture. During this time it has become the center of education and the place where city, Ukrainian and international conferences and seminars are held. The lyceum has a number of traditions conscientiously supported by students and teachers now.
The student's theatrical groups work in the lyceum, including English-speaking theatrical studio «Soffit» – a many-time winner of theatrical contests as well as club of sporting dance «Chance», sporting groups and sections, debate club «Pandora» where students master capability of conducting a dialogue, defending their own opinion in native and foreign languages. Kateryna Yasko, a student of Klovsky Lyceum № 77 was selected to meet and greet the 42nd President of the USA Bill Clinton on behalf of student's youth of Ukraine. It became a result of excellent work of debate club «Pandora».
Klovsky Lyceum № 77 keeps the best properties of soviet school, about which the majority feel nostalgic till now carefully aiming at teaching and education of children.
