Institute of zoology by the name of T.T.Shmalgauzena of Ukrainian NAS is the leading enterprise in the course series of zoological sciences: systematization and faunal, phylogeny and zoogeography, population ecology and developmental morphology, monitoring and fauna protection, analysis of biodiversity of Ukrainian fauna.

Works in the field of elaboration and biological methods of plants and animals protection, saving of gane pool of rare and threatened species, embrional development, sociobiology of insects, acarology, urbozoology, parasitology, studying of anthropogenic factors influence on fauna, particulary , researches of CAPP alienation zone fauna are very actual.

The main task of the institute is research of security principle and stable development of fauna diversity, its rational use and reproduction.

The institute edits "Herald of zoology" journal and monographic applications of the journal; publishes "The fauna of Ukraine" monoraphical series.
