The O.K. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (IMV NASU) is an outstanding center of research in the field of taxonomy, physiology, biotechnology of microorganisms, biotechnology, ecology and general virology.
The IMV NAS of Ukraine was founded on May,31, 1928 by the world famous scientist academician D. K. Zabolotny, who was the president of the All -Ukrainian Academy of Sciences at that time.
Today the Institute works in two trends: studies fundamentals of biological activity of microorganisms and viruses with the purpose of its regulation and study of ecology, taxonomy of microorganisms and revealing of the species and strains for development of biotechnological processes. The traditionally fundamental researches of scientists become the foundation for creation of the newest biotechnologies and a whole number of technological processes in industry, agriculture, pubic health services and environment protection.
Such drugs as biosporin, subalin, batumin, novoimanin, salvin, microcid, karotin, interferons, and preparations for agriculture - litosil, nitrogenbacter, azogran, endosporin, bovilakt, laktin, laktosan and many other have been leveled at the Institute and widely used. Preparations for decontamination of the environment, ferments for production of sour-dairy products (gerolact, 1actogerovit, Kyiv beverage and other) have been created on the basis of microorganisms selection at the Institute. The scientists of the INV have developed the method of exact and operative estimation of biocorrosion activity of soil. The National collection of microorganisms, one of the greatest collections all over the world, has been created at the IMV NAS Ukraine.
By this time more than 20000 stains of microorganisms, which are used for molecular and biological researches and biotechnology are kept in the collection. The depository of microorganisms functions on the basis of the Institute.
The Institute issues the Microbiological Journal since 1934.
